Motor full load current

Estimate motor current from its rating and supply. Confirm with the nameplate.

Typical motor-current lookup or rating-based estimate. Use motor nameplate current and starting/protection requirements for final selection.

Rated shaft power output of the motor.

Supply voltage and number of phases.

Results

Enter motor power and supply, then calculate.

Method and assumptions

  • Table method: typical full load currents for 4-pole squirrel-cage motors at 50 Hz, taken at the next listed rating up. Above the largest listed motor the current is scaled in proportion to power.
  • Formula method: I = P ÷ (V × η × pf) for single-phase, or P ÷ (√3 × V × η × pf) for three-phase.
  • AS/NZS 3000 does not tabulate motor currents. Use the nameplate current for cable and protection selection.

Check the stated method and limits against your installation. Results are calculation aids, not certification.
